After Wrath of the Lich King you promptly hit level 80 and settled into the routine of doing dailies and heroics in Northend. Still raising gold for your Mechano-Hog or Tundra Mammoth and fed up with camped spots in Northend? Good news! Outland is now the competition free zone for farming and grinding. In my opinion if you have to fight for a spot or constantly having your nodes stolen, you are likely better off finding a new place to grind and will make more money in the long run if you don't have to compete for everything.

Outland is an abandoned wasteland these days except for a few people trying to level up alternative characters. Unless you play on an extremely high population server, expect to make money non-stop in Outland off of herbs, mines, instances and reputation items. People will always need the resources from outland to level trade skills such as engineering, blacksmithing, etc. Many of the epic items that can be created or found in Outland resources are still good at level 75 or so. Even though, items sell for less than they once did on the auction house, there is still plenty of cash to be made in Outland.

Mining and Herbalism

Outland is so deserted on my server, that I can fly around Hellfire Peninsula 3 times and come out with 275 gold worth of ore and gems. I found that the best place to mine and find herbs is the Isle of Quel'Danas. Once, an overcrowded daily quest destination, Quel'Danas is now a ghost town and full of rich adamantite ore that is never mined and mana thistles that never get picked. In ½ an hour I was able to mine 50 adamantite ore and get 40 mana thistles, here with no competition at all. The only person I saw the entire time was a level 71 death knight doing dailies. Instead of selling the herbs I find, I send them to my scribe to make Darkmoon cards and armor and weapon vellum for my enchanter.

Cloth and Reputation

The Sunfuries of Mana Forge Coruu have always been a sweet spot for AOE (area of effect) grinding for mages. Now that all my competition is in Northend fighting each other for frostweave cloth, I have the spot all to myself. I can still make about 300 gold an hour here off netherweave cloth, Sunfury signets, rare jewel crafting recipes, arcane tomes, disenchanted items and herbalism and mining. On my server, the price of netherweave cloth has dropped to 6 gold for a stack of 20 while frostweave commands a price of 15 gold for 20.

Granted the signets and tomes do not sell as well as they once did but I still get at least 1 gp per signet and 15 gold per tome. Want to get exalted with the Consortium for your achievements? Go ahead and visit the Zaxxis at the Heap by Area 52, no one hunts them anymore and the grind is very easy to do with the repeatable quest Another Heap of Ethereals given by Nether-Stalker Khay'ji in Area 52.

Instance Farming

If you are a level 80 death knight, I know for a fact that you can easily solo farm the following Outland instances solo, no healer required: Hellfire Ramparts, Blood Furnace, Underbog, Slave Pens, Sethekk Halls, Mana Tombs and Auchenai Crypts. Steam Vaults, Shadow Labyrinth and the Tempest Keep instances will still require you to bring along a friend unless you have high end dps (damage per second). These instances still drop excellent reputation items, greens that can be disenchanted, recipes and other goodies that make them worthwhile.

So if your Northend dailies are done and you're frustrated trying to raise cash in Northend, consider revisiting Outland. Outland's instances are the new Scarlet Monastery and no one is taking advantage of the vast resources available from mining, herbalism or AOE grinding anymore.
